about

Tu me manques, Thierry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I met Thierry in 2011 thanks to Adrien Fregosi, who was hosting one of the last show at his gallery in Grenoble called Going Blind. I think the show was about paños, which are handkerchiefs designed by chicanos prisoners... I had even played an a cappella Mulan Serrico show... but I think it was the show before that that I met Thierry. I thought he was Jean Figus at first, a guy that was hanging out at Radio Campus when I was a student in Grenoble some twenty years ago, but it was not him, it was Thierry. And that was ten years ago. Thierry was then working at Metamkine, the now gone great european distro for any experimental, noise, concrete, avant-garde music you could think of. He had started his label called Doubtful Sounds, a pun in reference to the actual place in New Zealand. Being educated in geography, Thierry is fascinated with the furthest place from France you can find on Earth, which is New Zealand (maybe it is some place in Australia but who cares ?). Any aspect of it fascinates him, I even think that he likes rugby so much because of New Zealand and not because of our local club FCG. Of course the kiwi music fascinates him, I guess for its mixture of modernity and peculiarity: here you must think of The Avengers, but above all the Flying Nun Records roster, The Chills, Tall Dwarfs and Chris Knox, The Clean and The Dead C.
Of course this album is a summary of everything that interests Thierry: the avant-garde tradition of minimalism and repetition, and a contemplative take on rock'n'roll and distortion.
In some of the tracks, Thierry plays with transistors in an unique fashion: he gives a guitar stroke that is just powerful enough to trigger the distortion, challenging the lower threshold rather the full capacity of the device, as it is more often the case.
How strong should you be to be heard ?
Please enjoy this album as much as you can, I do not know any "Work in Progress" that was more finished than this, and any tracks that had more unique titles. If you guess the common point of all the numbers you'll get a free copy.
